Transport in Secunderabad

Secunderabad may be separated from Hyderabad by the man made lake named Hussain Sagar lake, but both the cities comprise of one Municipal Corporation. Secunderabad is one of the largest cantonments in India. Transport from Secunderabad to any city in India is no hassle as there is a state-of-the-art railway station, bus terminals and airport in place.

Road Transport in Secunderabad

The road that connects the twin cities is Rashtrapati road (earlier known as King's Way) and Mahatma Gandhi (MG) road (previously known as James' Street) ) via Tank Bund road. MG road is spread across an area of around 2 kms. and is a great shopping zone. It is also one of the busiest roads of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.There is the Tobacco bazaar, pot market, cloth market, gold market and general market for you to visit along with shops, hotels, police station, jewellery shops, saree shops, international outlets. Warm up your bargaining skills before venturing into this market.

The main bus stations here are Jubilee Bus Station and the Rathfile Bus station. Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses also run for making commuting easy for people.

Do not worry about buses as there are plenty of them owing to the location of MG road between Rani Gunj bus depot and Secunderabad station. Secunderabad Jubilee Bus Station comes under Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

Railway Station in Secunderabad

The Secunderabad Railway station comes under South Central Railway (SCR) Zone of the Indian Railways. Secunderabad railway station is a major railway junction on Wadi-Vijayawada railway route and Nanded–Guntakal railway lines. It is also known as Secunderabad Junction.

The station is also Divisional Headquarters station of Secunderabad Division of the SCR. It was built in the year 1874 by the Nizam of Hyderabad State during British rule. The Indian Railways took it under its wing in 1951. The station looks like a fort with an exquisite architecture.

The railway station has achieved ISO-9001 Certification for good services imparted in the field of ticket, luggage and parcel booking as well as management of trains. From the station, you can take MMTS or Hyderabad Road Transport buses and reach your destination comfortably.

The Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET), a training Institute of Railways is also located in Secunderabad. Railway staff is trained here in the field of telecom and railway signalling.
 
The station boasts of computerized reservation system. It was electrified in 1993 towards Kazipet and Vijayawada Junction. There is an electric locomotive shed in South Lallaguda, built in 1995, which has the capacity to maintain 100 electric locomotives. Secunderabad Junction has 10 platforms covered by RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) roof.

All metre gauge services were converted into to broad gauge under the Project Uni gauge program of Indian Railways. Other two railway stations in Hyderabad-Secunderabad are Kachiguda Railway Station and Deccan-Nampalli Railway Station.

Vijayawada Junction-Wadi line passing through Secunderabad Junction is one of the busiest lines of South Central Railways. A number of freight services are also operated from Secunderabad Junction.This station is also a freight station with many freight rail services by Indian Railways, using the station. It has a Freight Operation Information System for efficient monitoring of freight movement.Special rail services to various places are started during summer vacations.

Facilities such as book stalls, waiting halls, cloak rooms, cafes, pharmacy store, digital display boards, A/C waiting room, vehicle parking facilities, taxi stand etc. are available in the station. For security, CCTV cameras have been installed at various places including Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras,  hand-held sensors and metal detectors, RPF (Railway Protection Force) personnel, National Security Guards (NSG) for protection from terrorist activities too.

Multi-Modal Transport System in Secunderabad

Then there is the MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) which is a sub urban railway system in Hyderabad. It has made commuting really fast, simple and comfortable. It functions in joint partnership of Andhra Pradesh government and South Central Railways.
