Geography of Secunderabad

Secunderabad is situated on the Deccan Plateau with an elevation of about 543 metres (1781 ft.) This city of Telangana is located at 17.45oN 78.5oE towards North of Hyderabad. Rashtrapati Road and MG (Mahatama Gandhi) road connect the twin cities via Tank Bund. Rashtrapati road was previously known as King's Way while MG road was popular as James' Street. As far as geographical features of Secunderabad and nearby areas is concerned, the entire area is actually a rocky terrain with hills in certain regions.

Hyderabad and Secunderabad are just 10 kms. apart and separated by Hussain Sagar lake. Secunderabad lies to the north of Hyderabad. Mahatma Gandhi road, which connects Secunderabad to twin city Hyderabad is one of the busiest streets replete with hotels, restaurants and shopping areas.The Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus depot near rail line and the Jubilee bus depot aid people to commute comfortably.

Hyderabad district comprises of denudational hills of granitic rocks. Musi river supplies water to the area. The main source of drinking water in the two cities, that is, Hyderabad and Secunderabad, are Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. These are artificial lakes created by dams on the Musi and are located towards West of Hyderabad. Hussain Sagar lake, a man made lake, lies in between the two cities.

Grey to pink granite is widely found in the area which is medium to coarse-grained and porphyritic or non-porphyritic. Hyderabad district comprises red sandy soil or altisols with ultisols (laterite soil) in the northwest part and vertisols (medium black soil) in basalt region. However, in the southeast region, mixed red and black soil can also be found.

Hyderabad district and even Ranga Reddy district fall under seismic zone-III. The ground water in the entire area is fast depleting due to less rainfall and increased industrialization. Hyderabad and Secunderabad are urban areas and have been prone to air and water pollution in the recent past.

Deforestation and industrialization have led to increase in day temperatures in the area.
Agriculture in nearby regions is basically dependent on rainfall. South-West (June to September) and North-East Monsoons (October to December) bring rains in the state.

People and Population in Secunderabad

The population of Secunderabad city is 213698 according to official census report for 2011.The cities add more and more people to the ever increasing population. Most of the population comprises of Hindus followed by Muslims and Jains. Then there are also slums all over the city formed by migrants from other parts of the country.

The Anglo-Indians who are of British and European descent are known as 'Domicile Indians'. More western in values, dress, food habits and language, they are well educated and employed in IT companies, Call Centres, teaching and nursing jobs among others.

Growth is fast in these metro towns and what is really needed is proper care of infrastructure, administration and basic necessities such as clean air and clean drinking water in the entire Hyderabad district, including Secunderabad.
